Summary:

The Controls Engineer on the Automation Engineering team will work on developing automation manufacturing equipment for a manufacturing facility. They will assist in the design and optimization of control system architecture with senior controls engineers, automation engineers and process engineers. They will learn a variety of equipment controls hardware such as PLC, HMI, vision systems, servo drives, and six-axis robots. The role provides superior opportunities for career growth thanks to the diversity of programming languages between multiple hardware manufacturers in use at this facility.

Responsibilities:

Existing automation equipment refinement:

  • Optimize and improve existing automated processes to maximize manufacturing facility throughput and uptime.
  • Characterize and validate automated processes using a data-driven statistical approach such as Capacity test, Capability test (DOE, Gage R&R, Cpk, Ppk, etc)

New automation equipment:

  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits. Create detail equipment specification and release to Vendor for quoting technical evaluation
  • Lay out new industrial electrical control panels which are NFPA79/NEC/UL508A compliant, and create electrical, pneumatic and fluid schematics. Manage electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, pneumatic and fluid plumbing
  • Power up electrical systems and configure hardware per application specifications Design system test plans and execute equipment validation tests
  • Develop and debug ladder logic PLC code with an emphasis on generating code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable, and reusable. PLC code will interact with subsystems such as conveyors, robots, machine vision, and 3rd party equipment or appliance
  • Comply with the company safety procedures. Live the company culture of integrity and professional competence. Implement (ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant) control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, food processing equipment, intelligent appliance, and other high volume manufacturing equipment
  • Generate aesthetically simple HMI screens for complex machinery while providing sufficient feedback for troubleshooting
  • Maintain records pertinent to each project in the form of time, sketches, drawings specifications, electrical bill of material, etc.
  • Write user manuals to communicate the functionality of company developed programs

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Programming Logic Controllers (PLC) (Allen-Bradley, Siemens)
  • Configuring and designing HMI/OIT systems (e.g. Allen Bradley, Siemens, EasyBuilder Pro)
  • Familiar with Vision Systems (e.g. Keyence, Cognex)
  • Familiar with various Motion Controllers/Actuators (e.g. IAI, Siemens) Previous training courses in robotic motion (Fanuc, ABB)
  • Experience and skill in troubleshooting control system issues

Experience Preferred: 2-5 years

Education: B.S. undergraduate degree. Advanced degree preferred.

Travel: 0-10%. This percentage may change as the business grows.
